How do the “posts” in postmodernism and posthumanism connect to contemporary art?
Post means after. In this talk, drawing on examples of art shared with you, Fiona will examine artistic, curatorial and pedagogical approaches to and encounters with the presentation and experience of pedagogy alongside contemporary western art framed by modernism, postmodernism and posthumanism.
In modernism authority and agency reside in the creator – the artist, the teacher, the expert. As we examine the posts, this idea is contested. In postmodernism, authority is distributed via the idea of multiple realities to students, to gallery visitors, and others. In posthumanism, in the context of global warming and other crises, the authority of humans is contested, and agency is redistributed to consider the rights of all living beings and lands.
